Game 2 will likely be most remembered for the huge brawl after the final horn that saw Vladimir Sobotka break Dominic Moore’s nose and Roman Polak unleash the fury on Justin Braun. It’s not often you see Jonathan Quick off balance, flailing at the puck. This is exactly what happened when T.J. Oshie took his shootout attempt in the team’s 1-0 shootout loss against the Los Angeles Kings. At times the Blues have looked dreadful in the shootout but typically Oshie provides a welcome dose of finesse, quick hands and pure skill. Read more.
Some wins are a group effort. Others, like the victory the Blues had over Columbus Sunday night, can be mostly attributed to one individual. As a whole the St. Louis Blues have rarely disappointed since Ken Hitchock took over 13 games into the 2011-12 season. Since his arrival nearly every skater on the roster has brought his game to a new level, propelling the Blues into a battle for the top spot not only in their division and conference but in the entire league. One exemption to this rule is Chris Stewart who has struggled mightily for the bulk of the 2011-12 campaign. As the season enters the last couple weeks, is Stewart finally getting his act together? February 2nd is Groundhog Day. It’s also the anniversary of one of the worst shootout attempts in NHL history by the former member of the St. Louis Blues skater Dennis Wideman. Back on February 2nd, 2006 we saw Wideman streak in for a shootout attempt only to see his entire body somehow leave the ice without even an attempt on net. There really aren’t words for how bad his attempt is. Losing your footing is one thing. Losing your footing so badly on a deke that sends you airborne is another. Vladimir Tarasenko just keeps on impressing. Following his “magical” shootout goal during the KHL All-Star Game, Tarasenko returned to action and scored three very impressive goals for SKA St. Petersburgh. Should Tarasenko’s success in Russia get Blues fans excited or should it give us more reasons to worry that the talented forward won’t leave the KHL for the NHL? Read more.
Vladimir Tarasenko put on a bit of a magic show during the KHL’s All-Star festivities. Competing in the shootout contest, Tarasenko used the force to send the goaltender the wrong way before recalling the puck and sliding it into an empty net. This great bit of trickery is unfortunately pulled off with a very basic solution (string and tape) but the result was a fantastic one. The attempt is pretty impressive even upon multiple viewings, but even Tank’s bit of magic wasn’t enough to get even the slightest reaction from the stoic Russian commentators. Read more.
T.J. Oshie has a knack for scoring huge timely goals for the St. Louis Blues. Last night was no different. The Blues found themselves deadlocked after two periods with the Dallas Stars in a game that saw the Blues have numerous chances pass by unconverted. With just over eight minutes left in the third, it took a moment of pure brilliance from both David Perron and Oshie to carry the Blues to another huge victory. Read more.
Saturday’s game featured a little bit of everything. Perhaps the most memorable moment however, aside from the Blues actually winning a shootout, was the huge scrap between Ryan Reaves and Brad Satubitz.
