Brian Elliott to Start Game 3
Brian Elliott will start Game 3 and will be backed by Jake Allen, as reported by Jeremy Rutherford. Jaroslav Halak, who had to be pulled from Game 2 with a “lower-body” injury will not dress for Game 3.
Most fans assumed Brian Elliott would be called on for Game 3 after his outstanding relief in Game 2. The Blues confirmed these thoughts today, indicating that Halak’s injury is not only serious enough that he can’t start but also serious enough where he would not be able to assume a backup role. Jake Allen, who was called up under emergency circumstances after Game 2, will sit on the bench as the team’s #2.
Immediately, one has to wonder what exactly is going on with Halak. The nature of the NHL playoffs is to offer as little information as possible when it comes to an injury. As of the date of this article all we have to go on is that it is a “lower-body” injury, which really only effectively rules out the possibility of a concussion that fans speculated about immediately following his injury. A few rumors have suggested it is an ankle injury, but there haven’t been any confirmed reports.
For other teams the news that their starting goaltender is out for a critical game would be devastating. For the Blues, while it is major news, you probably won’t find many fans hitting the panic button. The team’s strength all season long has been in net with Halak and Elliott combining to be a formidable duo. When Halak has been Goalie 1, Elliott has been Goalie 1A.
Elliott will look to build off his success in Game 2 (17 saves on 17 shots) when he mans the net as the St. Louis starter in Game 3.
