Brian Elliott Signs a New Two-Year Extension

Brian Elliott Signs a New Two-Year Extension

Brian Elliott

Brian Elliott has been one of the biggest surprises in the NHL so far in 2011-12. As a result, Elliott was rewarded for his first half heroics by being named to the 2012 All-Star Game set to take place in Ottawa. The Blues went a step further and rewarded Elliott for his play with a new two-year contract extension, as reported by the team’s official Twitter account. Elliott’s new deal will pay him $1.7 million in 2012-13 and $1.9 million in 2013-14.

That takes care of that.

With Elliott playing so brilliantly in 2011-12 and working on a small, one-year $600,000 contract, the Blues went out and made sure they wouldn’t have to enter a bidding war with any other clubs when the year concludes.

At his current salary, Elliott has not only been one of the best stories in the league but he also has been one of the biggest steals and best values in the NHL. Elliott earns his new contract with a 15-5-1 record in 2011-12 with a tidy 1.68 GAA that has been among the best in the league all season long.

This now wraps up both Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak through the 2013-14 season.

Down in Peoria, Ben Bishop has been playing extremely well and several fans have questioned what his future with the club might be. This deal with Elliott might have answered that question.

Barring a major injury, Elliott and Halak now have the St. Louis crease locked down through 2013-14. Bishop is at the stage in his career where he will be looking for time in the NHL and a couple more years in the AHL won’t help his development nor will it sit happily with the tall netminder. The obvious dot that must be connected here leads to a trade. The Blues feel comfortable enough with Elliott to give him a new deal. Halak still has two more years left after 2011-12. There’s no room for Bishop.

Bishop is also on the last leg of his contract that expires at end of the year while Jake Allen is signed through 2012-13.

Heat up the hot stove. Bishop might have just been placed on the block.
