Brian Elliott Headed to the 2012 All-Star Game

Brian Elliott - St. Louis Blues

The final rosters for the 2012 All-Star Game have been released. The lone representative from the St. Louis Blues is Brian Elliott who will head to Ottawa to participate in his first All-Star Game. By maintaining some of the best numbers in the NHL this season it’s clear Elliott is deserving. However, were any of his teammates snubbed or was Elliott the only obvious choice?

I, like I assume many other fans, barely care about the All-Star Game. With the huge success of the Winter Classic the NHL All-Star Game has nearly slipped out of mind completely. I’ll still tune in but my interest in the competition is lacking.

That being said I’m glad to see Brian Elliott get some recognition for his performance this season. Elliott stepped up while Jaroslav Halak struggled when the 2011-12 season got rolling and hasn’t looked back since. Elliott’s GAA has consistently been near the top (if not at the top) of the NHL. Prior to the team’s action on Thursday night Elliott’s GAA is a tiny 1.62. He adds a record of 15-5-0 and an impressive .940 save percentage.

Elliott wasn’t even included on the original All-Star Game ballot so it’s nice to see that he was included when the final list was released.

Should we feel slighted that the Blues are only sending one representative despite sitting near the top of the Western Conference? Personally I don’t mind – I’d rather keep our guys at home instead of increasing the chance of a fluke injury in an exhibition game. However, I’m sure some fans feel David Backes, T.J. Oshie, Kevin Shattenkirk or Alex Pietrangelo had a realistic shot at receiving an invite.

Backes probably had the best chance of the bunch, however his style of play really doesn’t translate to an exhibition game. Backes is known for disrupting play with his physicality and for his constant hard work – two traits that don’t really work for a game where checking is all but off limits.

Offer your opinion below – would you have liked to see St. Louis send more representatives? Is a potential injury something that worries you? Is the All-Star Game something you still find that interesting? Would love to hear your feedback.
